Have you ever experienced a situation where you slipped, had a minor fall, and experienced back pain the next day? Or how about bending down to pick something and feeling a sharp pain after returning to the original position? It may be what’s called a lower back muscle strain.

Lower back muscle strain is awful and a fact of life. Sooner or later, everybody experiences it in their lifetime. It can be acute or chronic, depending on the body. It occurs when the muscles in the lower back are stretched or torn, often due to sudden or repetitive movements.

Let us understand the symptoms, causes, and risk factors associated with lower back muscle strain to avoid and manage it effectively.

    Symptoms

    1. Pain and Tenderness

Pain and tenderness in the lower back region are two of the most common symptoms of lower back muscle strain. The main may get extended to the buttocks and thighs. Usually, the afflicted area is sensitive to touch.

    2. Stiffness and Limited Range of Motion

A person suffering from lower back muscle strain may experience stiffness while bending, twisting, or performing specific movements. The stiffness limits the range of motion, making it difficult to move the back.

    3. Muscle Spasms

Sometimes, excruciating muscle spasms accompany a back strain.  It can be intense and sudden, causing further discomfort. The injured muscles may experience cramps or tightness.

    4. Weakness

Severe strains may lead to temporary weakness in the affected area.

    5. Pain Aggravated by Activity

If you already suffer from lower back muscle strain, activities involving lower back muscles may worsen it. During this period, the patient must avoid certain activities, such as lifting heavy weights, bending, or standing for extended periods.

    Causes

    1. Sudden Movement or Overexertion

A sudden, forceful movement can lead to lower back muscle strain. It can happen during activities such as lifting heavy objects, sudden twisting, or even a misstep.

    2.  Poor Posture

Sitting or standing in an appropriate posture for a long time can strain the lower back muscles excessively. It is commonly observed among people with desk jobs who sit for a long time while working, maintaining inappropriate posture for a long time.

    3.  Inactivity and Weakness

Your muscles may weaken or atrophy if you have a sedentary lifestyle with little physical activity. It causes muscle weakening, including those in the lower back, which are more susceptible to strain.

    4.  Muscle Imbalance

Some muscles in the lower back are stronger and more taut than others, which leads to muscle imbalance. It disrupts the natural processes required for proper movement and support. This muscle imbalance puts excessive pressure on some muscles while others remain unutilized.

    5. Age-Related Degenration

With age-related degeneration, the muscles and ligaments become less flexible, becoming more susceptible to strains.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, lower back muscle strain can cause discomfort and problems with daily activities. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and good posture can reduce the risk of muscle strain. If you experience severe pain in your lower back, consult your healthcare provider. Many healthcare centers, such as ANSSI Wellness, can help alleviate pain through non-medication, non-injection treatment, avoiding complications, and promoting faster recovery.
